Appearance Vs Content

1) A lady in a faded gingham dress and her husband, dressed in a homespun threadbare suit, stepped off the train in Boston, and walked timidly without an appointment into the president's outer office. The secretary could tell in a moment that such backwoods, country hicks had no business at Harvard and probably didn't even deserve to be in Cambridge. She frowned.

"We want to see the president," the man said softly.
"He'll be busy all day," the secretary snapped.
"We'll wait," the lady replied.

For hours, the secretary ignored them, hoping that the couple would finally become discouraged and go away. They didn't. And the secretary grew frustrated and finally decided to disturb the president, even though it was a chore she always regretted to do.

"Maybe if they just see you for a few minutes, they'll leave," she told him.

And he sighed in exasperation and nodded. Someone of his importance obviously didn't have the time to spend with them, but he detested gingham dresses and homespun suits cluttering up his outer office. The president, stern-faced with dignity, strutted toward the couple.

The lady told him, "We had a son that attended Harvard for one year. He loved Harvard. He was happy here. But about a year ago, he was accidentally killed. And my husband and I would like to erect a memorial to him, somewhere on campus".

The president wasn't touched he was shocked.

"Madam," he said gruffly, "we can't put up a statue for every person who attended Harvard and died. If we did, this place would look like a cemetery."

"Oh, no," the lady explained quickly, "we don't want to erect a statue. We thought we would like to give a building to Harvard.

The president rolled his eyes. He glanced at the gingham dress and homespun suit, then exclaimed, "A building! Do you have any earthly idea how much a building costs?
We have over seven and a half million dollars in the physical plant at Harvard."

For a moment the lady was silent.
The president was pleased. He could get rid of them now.
The lady turned to her husband and said quietly, "Is that all it costs to start a University? Why don't we just start our own?" Her husband nodded.

The president's face wilted in confusion and bewilderment.

Mr. and Mrs. Leland Stanford walked away,
travelling to Palo Alto, California where they established the University that bears their name, a memorial to a son that Harvard no longer cared about!

2)Mr Treasure Kalu woke up with an Inspired idea - to go to a Prison and Talk, motivate, inspire and Proclaim the Gospel to the prisoners.

Two Hours after he woke up, he was at a Prison gate.
"Good morning, Please I'd like to see Director of this Facility" he said to a security man.
The man told him dismissively that the director was busy and wouldn't have time to see him.
..Treasure was wearing a T-shirt and a jean...

He quickly went home and changed to a fitted, nicely cut suit.

~~An hour later,he was back at the Prison.
"Good morning sir, how can we help you" Said a security man.
"Please,I'd love to see the director of this facility".
"Okay. Please come in,while I call his office".

Treasure was taken to the director's office. He told him about his idea and was given permission to do what he wanted.

..............

We have all heard the adage that says "Don't Judge a book by it's cover"
You could go all wrong if judge someone or something by just the outward appearance as "appearance could be extremely deceiving".

So next time, you see someone that's not exactly appealing to the eye, don't immediately dismiss the person as someone with no content or value.
Always be courteous and respectful to people you meet for the first time,no matter how they look. Their content and value may just be want you need.

...........

It's wrong to judge by the outward but I don't blame anyone for doing so.
Reason is, Before we hear someone speak or see them do anything, the first thing that get's registered in our minds is how they look.

So don't blame someone if you are judged by your looks (good and bad) which are different from your true personality.
Heard of the adage "Dress the way you want to be addressed" ?

...........

Nobody wants to be associated with rags. So dress well.
Note this: Dressing well doesn't mean you should use up your life savings in buying designers clothing.
I could dress 'Stylish', decent and yet glamorous, worthy of anyone's respect without wearing all designers.

Your Dress sense should be more of your Style, what you look good on, what you are comfortable with than the Name of what you are wearing or the amount it costs. Really, when we see someone, we don't immediately see the label on the suit, shirt of blouse or the shoe, We just say the colours, the way it looks on you,the way you carry yourself in it.

............

Okay, let's not get to carried away with appearance.

I'd go with someone who has content, who has something up there, who has something I could benefit from than someone who looks good but yet has nothing upstairs.

Na beauty we go chop?

Truly, Your content, Your value weighs a lot more than Your Look's. At the end of the day, it's what you can give that would keep the respect and admiration.
So, Keep Learning. Keep developing yourself. Keep adding Value. Increase your content. Spend more time, money and resources on your inside than your outside.

.............

Let's say you go to a bookstore with #1500.

You find only three books worth #1300 each and the attendant there, tell you the books are all in the same field.

One has a very catchy Title and an attractive cover, The second has a lame title and a terribly designed cover page while The third is on the average - It looks better than the second but isn't as catchy as the first.
NB: All Three books are sealed.

Which would you pick?
Well, I'm pretty sure I'd pick the first.

Just Before you Pay for the Book, the attendant asks if you'd like to have a glimpse of content.
Definitely! Who wouldn't?

So he goes into another room, and bring an extra unsealed copy of each book.
Cool yea?

Well, after flipping through, You discover that the content of First is just the opposite of it's looks. The book that looks Lame actually does have a good content, while the third book is still on average - a lot better than the First and yet below that of the second.

Which would you pick then?

I'm pretty sure everyone would pick either the second or the third, infact majority would go with the second - Na Fine person go chop?

Selah!

  1. dear blogger, your story is good but a little too long. is it a book or a post? i got the point to your post a long time ago so i think you could have summarized it alot. the title of this post should have been "don't judge a book by its cover" something that is very relatable. appearance vs content is very vague. my major point here though is that you sure could have made your story or your post less tiresome to read. i am nigerian and yes we like it pure and simple. CRITIK
